SENDING A LETTER

How hard can it be to send a letter?  I guess it depends on exactly where the letter is going and who is on the receiving end.  Should it be handwritten?  Or can it be typed?  Yes, I still call it typing.  Can it be funny or is it serious?  Will your emotions influence what you write?  Anger can be loud, when certain words are used. Sadness is reflected in the choice of words.  Do you use actual mail or send it quickly using email?

My letters are sorta like this blog.  I never know what they will say.  I would start writing what my right brain was thinking, but, sometimes, my left brain will pop in there and go in an entirely different direction.  That means the recipient has to consider the source.

Our grandson is in Navy basic training and I want him to know we support his journey.  I sent a letter when he first arrived at the Naval training center.  I typed it out, addressed the envelope, stamped it, and sent it on its way.  Today I learned a new way to send him a letter.

There is an app, Sandboxx, that allows me to type my letter, include a picture or two, and send it to my grandson.  They print it and get it to him quickly.  Much faster than if I used the Pony Express.

My goal is to point out the blessing of letters.  A blessing for the sender and the receiver.  Sadly, we have lost the art of writing letters.  We send a quick text or jot out an email.  BUT a letter is more.  It shows you used your time.  YOU GAVE THEM YOUR TIME!!  You have blessed them as you told them about your day or how you learned something new or gave them a scripture to think about.  Letters can be powerful.

Can you imagine receiving a letter with these phrases:

  • Grace and peace be yours in abundance
  • In his great mercy
  • New birth into a living hope
  • An inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade
  • Greatly rejoice
  • Proven genuineness of your faith
  • Set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming
  • For you have been born again ….. through the living and enduring word of God

            Taken from 1 Peter 1

Think what those letters meant to early believers that could not pick up a Bible and read God’s Word.  How encouraging to receive a letter about God’s love and eternal life.

How I would love to receive an actual letter, handwritten, proclaiming how I am doing in my faith.  A letter to remind me of God’s great mercy.  A letter for me to hold.

Send a letter.  It doesn’t have to be long or flowery. All it needs to say is, “I am thinking of you.”
