 BIRDS

Birds fly.  Birds build nests.  Birds drop poop on our deck.  I have never been a bird watcher.  I love to see hawks, but that about does it.  Often, I don’t even notice them.  Until …

The bird, an ordinary black bird, … landed on the highest point in an evergreen tree.  It was flying and then, just like that, it was sitting on the tip of a twig.  And, in that instant, I realized I had witnessed a miracle.  A miracle called creation.

How can a bird land on such a tiny twig?  How can it sit there?  How come it doesn’t fall off when it sleeps?  How does it know to come back to this area and when to fly south?  I might have to start paying more attention to birds.

Even though I know the answer, I like to look things up so I googled where birds came from.  The answer?  Birds are shrunken dinosaurs.  No really!

Stephen Brusatte, a paleontologist at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland:  “A bird didn’t just evolve from a T. rex overnight, but rather the classic features of birds evolved one by one; first bipedal locomotion, then feathers, then a wishbone, then more complex feathers that look like quill-pen feathers, then wings,” Brusatte said.  “The end result is a relatively seamless transition between dinosaurs and birds, so much so that you can’t just draw an easy line between these two groups.”

Birds produced a burst of evolution.  “It seems like birds had happened upon a very successful new body plan and new type of ecology—flying at small size—and this led to an evolutionary explosion,” Brusatte said.

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-dinosaurs-shrank-and-became-birds/

Okay, I guess.  I mean, if a paleontologist has the facts, then birds must be shrunken dinosaurs.  But where did the dinosaur come from?  I started going backwards and ended up searching where a cell came from.  Again, I wanted an honest answer.  Facts.

I found a scientific site: How Stuff Works.

“Perhaps the first living cells were completely different from what we see today, and no one has yet imagined what they might have been like.  Speaking in general terms, life can only have come from one of two possible places:

  • Spontaneous creation - Random chemical processes created the first living cell.
  • Supernatural creation - God or some other supernatural power created the first living cell.

And it doesn't really matter if aliens or meteorites brought the first living cell to earth, because the aliens would have come into existence through either spontaneous creation or supernatural creation at some point -- something had to create the first alien cells.”

https://science.howstuffworks.com/life/evolution/evolution11.htm?srch_tag=7d4rfrjekbtdcs2xushxhg3jwrjbinwd

Ladies and gentlemen we have our scientific answer: AND IT DOESN’T REALLY MATTER ….  SOMETHING HAD TO CREATE THE FIRST ALIEN CELLS.

The one thing I love about science is that we are told to use facts.  Facts do not lie.  Facts!  Facts!  Until the facts do not support the answer we want and then, wham, it doesn’t really matter.  Besides, there is still much to learn.

The How Stuff Works site also pointed out:  “Look at yourself in a mirror -- what you see is about 10 trillion cells divided into about 200 different types.  Our muscles are made of muscle cells, our livers of liver cells, and there are even very specialized types of cells that make the enamel for our teeth or the clear lenses in our eyes!”

A bird is a shrunken dinosaur?  Our body is made up of 10 trillion cells with 200 different types?  Random chemical process?  Something had to create the first cell?  And it doesn’t really matter?

I graduated high school.  I do not have a degree.  BUT I think it does matter.  I kept going back to the statement: Spontaneous creation - Random chemical processes created the first living cell.  I want facts.  I want it to matter.  So my final question is: Where did the chemical process come from?

This reminds me of the old joke:

The devil challenged God to a contest.  He said, “Creating man was no big deal.  I can do that.”

God answered, “Really.  You can create man?  You can take a handful of dirt, form it into a human, and blow life into his lungs?”

The devil, with a wicked grin, replied, “Of course.  I have the ability to do that.  And I can do it quicker than you.”

God figured this would give the angels a chuckle and agreed to the challenge.

The devil reached down to get a handful of dirt and God stopped him.  The devil looked at God and wondered what was going on.

God told the devil, “Make your own dirt.”

----------------------------------

Where did the bird come from?  Supernatural creation of course.  God created them.

And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.”  So God created …. And every winged bird according to its kind.  … and let the birds increase on the earth.”       Genesis 1:20-22

AND THE BUFFALO WALKED ON THE BEACH

            Written April 21, 2022

A mother nursed her child

A father read a story

A grandmother looked at a picture album

A grandfather watched the weather

And a buffalo walked on the beach

All this passed through my mind as I laid there with needles stuck in me from my head to my toes.

My imagination took two of my favorite things — beaches and buffalo — and put them together.

What a sight that would be!!!  Children would stop in their tracks and yell, “Mom.  Dad.  There is a buffalo walking on the beach!”  Mom and dad would look at each other, roll their eyes, and look back at their phones.

What a sight that would be!!!  Lifeguards would be on their emergency phones shouting, “I said BUFFALO! Yes.  Buffalo.”  The emergency operator would think, “The kids they hire now days.  Do they understand their job is no joke?  A buffalo.  Right.”

What a sight that would be!!!  The lady on the fourth floor, standing on her balcony, would smile and say, “Wow God.  You did this for me didn’t you?  Thank you.”

What about the other pictures floating in my mind?  Were they just images or were they images from my life?  Or were they caused by those needles stuck in me from my head to my toes.

Have you been wondering about the needles? As I write this, I am trying physical therapy and acupuncture to get rid of the pain from sciatica.  When the needles were in, the lights were dimmed, and I was told to not think of anything I had to do.  I was to only think good thoughts.  Places where I feel relaxed.  Places I love to visit.  Peaceful thoughts.

What?  Do not think of anything you have to do?  Well, duh.  The moment I heard “do not think of things you have to do,” what popped into my mind?  Everything I have to do.

Even with the lights out.  Even with the spa music playing.  It was hard to relax.  It was hard not to think about all the things I had to do.  Plus, the first time I was afraid to move for fear those needles would fly out of my body.

Today was my third time and I did relax.  I knew I could move a bit and the needles would stay in place.  The spa music was only a bit irritating.  And then, with a vision of a buffalo walking down the beach, I actually went to sleep.

\   \   \   \   \   /   /   /   /   /

Why is it so hard to relax?  Why do our minds keep working when our body wants to stop?  Why can we barely keep our eyes open during our favorite show, but go to bed and they will not shut.  Why can we be thinking happy thoughts, ready to drift off into never-never land, and WHAM – a worry knocks out all the good, happy thoughts and we lay there, wide awake, with absolutely no chance of falling asleep.

Maybe we are holding onto the wrong things as we try to drift off.  Maybe we are not allowing God to hold our worries and our fears.

Rejoice in the Lord always.  I will say it again:  Rejoice!  Let your gentleness be evident to all.  The Lord is near.  Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:4-7

We can find peace when we pray and petition God.  He will guard our hearts and minds.  BUT, we have to let Him.  We have to pray and petition and then we have to leave it with God.

And don’t forget to do it with thanksgiving!

\   \   \   \   \   /   /   /   /   /

Now, back to that buffalo walking on the beach.  He had escaped from Yellowstone and headed east for an adventure.  When he arrived in Orange Beach, Alabama, he put on his sunglasses, placed a hat decorated with funky palm trees between his horns, nodded to the lady on the fourth floor balcony, and headed toward the waves.

His name is Elmer.

EASTER RECAP

I truly enjoyed writing a Lenten series.  As usually happens, the series did not go where I thought it would.

My first writing, March 4, was to be on Passover.  I even looked it up on a Jewish website.  Then I started writing and somehow the words For The Third Time became the title.  I wondered how the disciples did not get it.  I have thought this before, but they had been with him three years.  Yet, Jesus still had to tell them three times.  I quickly realized I am no different than the disciples.  I sure do not get it the first time around.  Nor the second.  Sometimes not even the third.

March 11 blog, Glory and Anger, was to be on Jesus’ glorious entry into Jerusalem and his anger in the temple.  I was excited to write about the commotion his turning over those tables would have caused.  But somehow, the anger of the Pharisees stood out.  They were angry as they saw their source of income and their power slipping away.  Soon, they were angry enough to kill.  Anger can lead a person away from God.

By the time the March 18 blog, Gotcha, was finished, I realized this series was not to be the normal Easter series.  Like the “How do you put a giraffe into a refrigerator?” questions, the blogs were not going to be logical.  Instead, this series was to be the opposite.  I needed to look at all that was going on around Jesus.  I needed to picture the crowds.  I needed to figure out why people acted as they did.  I needed to figure out why I act like I do.

Anointing and Betrayal, March 25, told about a woman whose generosity was called waste and a man whose greed consumed him.  Anointing and Betrayal gave me goals.  I will strive to be as generous as the woman who anointed Jesus.  I will strive to never allow earthly greed to turn me away from God’s love and blessings.

I hope Jesus and His Own, April 1, made you think about the emotions of the Last Supper.  This one evening contained tradition, gentleness, drama, and the realization that lives were going to change.  We should take Communion with reverence as we honor the Lord’s Last Supper.

The April 8 blog, They Slept – They Missed It, tells how the disciples missed the opportunity to pray with and support Jesus.  They did not hear Jesus freely agree to His Father’s will.  My heart feels sorry for the disciples and they must have felt so guilty when they looked back at that evening, but I understand.  I go to sleep saying prayers and my eyes get heavy while I am reading the Bible.  What prayer did I not say?  What verse did I not understand?  I slept.  I missed it.

I did not want to write the blog for April 15, NO!  NO!  I DO NOT WANT TO SEE THIS!   We want to make Easter pretty.  We want nice pastel colors and flowers and new clothes and candy and the Easter bunny.  But this part of the Easter Story is not pretty and we must realize how Jesus suffered.  Remember, he was human!  He felt the spit land on him.  He felt each strike to his back.  He felt the thorns poke into his scalp.  He felt humiliated when he was stripped.  He felt abandoned.  But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.  This is God’s Son!!!  HE DID THIS FOR ME!  HE DID THIS FOR YOU!  HE DID THIS FOR EVERYONE!  But it was not pretty.  Never forget that.

Where Did He Go?  The Guards, The Women, and The Disciples, April 22, is written to help you see the confusion.  The guards would have been afraid to report the body missing.  I am sure they figured their head would be missing if they didn’t come up with an alternate truth.  They found a way out.  They took a bribe and lied.  The women were in shock.  The arrest, the trial, the crucifixion, and the body being placed in the tomb happened so quickly they were trying to put it all together.  The disciples were confused and afraid.  Would they be killed also?  Were they to go back to their “before Jesus called me” life?  After all, Jesus said, “It is finished.”  What now?

What now?  We are to be disciples.  We are to allow Jesus to work with us!

EASTER RECAP

Jesus said, “It is finished.”

Jesus died and was laid in a tomb,

BUT He is risen and sits at the right hand of God

It  IS  NOT  finished!

“Do not let your hearts be troubled.  You believe in God; believe also in me.  My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.  You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.  If you really know me, you will know my Father as well.  From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

John 14:1-4, 6-7

HE LIVES!  HE HAS A PLACE PREPARED!

It  IS  NOT  finished!

AMEN

 WHERE DID HE GO?

The Guards, The Women, and The Disciples

When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.”  With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

John 19:30

THE GUARDS – MATTHEW 27:65-66, 28:4, 11-15

“Take a guard,” Pilate answered.  “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.”

Matthew 27:65

There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. ….. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

Matthew 28:2-4

…the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened.  … gave the soldiers a large sum of money … “you are to say, ‘His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.’

And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day.

Matthew 28:11-15

Imagine those poor guards.  Given one small job:  Guard the tomb!  Instead, there they lay like dead men.  Can you see them opening their eyes and realizing the stone had been rolled away?  Can you see them looking in the tomb and hoping the body was still there?  Can you see their thoughts going wild, as they try to figure out how they were going to explain this?  Can you see them getting their story straight before they reported to the chief priests?

The guards took a bribe.  They lied.

THE WOMEN

MATTHEW 28:1-10, MARK 16:1-10, LUKE 24:1-10,

AND JOHN 20:1-3, 11-18

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. … an angel rolled back the stone and sat on it.

The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.  He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.

Matthew 28:1-2, 5-6

Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

(Mary Magdalene) turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).

John 20:16

The women had prepared the spices.  They were being strong as they made their journey to the tomb.  How could he be dead?  We thought ….  What was the last thing he said to me?  How will we move the stone?  Can you hear their thoughts?  Can you feel their anguish?  Each tear echoing, “It is finished.”

A few steps more and .. and the stone was no longer covering the entrance to the tomb.  There was an angel sitting there and he said to not be afraid….

When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others.

Luke 24:9

Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news:  “I have seen the Lord!”  And she told them that he had said these things to her.

John 20:18

Can you feel the joy?  Can you see the wonder in their eyes?  “HE HAS RISEN.”  Can you hear the relief in their voice?

THE DISCIPLES

MATTHEW 28:7, LUKE 24:11-53, AND JOHN 20:3-10, 19-29

(Angel speaking to the women)  Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee.  There you will see him.’  Now I have told you.”

Matthew 28:7

But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.  Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb.  Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.

Luke 24:11-12

An empty tomb?  He has risen?  Go to Galilee?  What were these women talking about?  Can you picture Peter running to the tomb?  John 20:3-4 says the other disciples also started for the tomb and actually outran Peter.  Can you see them trying to be the first one to the tomb?  Can you see them hesitate as they wondered what they would see?  Can you see Peter looking at the strips of linen?

The disciples were trying to understand the last few days.  The entry into Jerusalem and the overturning of the tables in the temple.  The Passover meal.  The garden.  The soldiers.  The fear.  The denial.  The death of Jesus.  The disciples were trying to understand the last few days and now the tomb was empty.  How were they to carry on?

Then two disciples came to the Eleven and told about the man they met on the road to Emmaus.  They told how they had walked with him and invited him to stay with them.

But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.”  So he went in to stay with them.

When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them.  Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.

Luke 24:29-31

While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”

He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you:  Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”

Luke 24:36, 44

Jesus said, “It is finished.”  Jesus died and was laid in a tomb, BUT it was not finished!

After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God.  Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.

Mark 16:19-20

Jesus said, “It is finished.”

Jesus died and was laid in a tomb,

BUT it  IS  NOT  finished!

AMEN

NO!  NO!  I DO NOT WANT TO SEE THS!

I do not want to write this one.  I want to go back.  I want the cup taken from him.  I do not want my Jesus to suffer.  I do not want to see Jesus betrayed, arrested, tried and beaten.  I do not want to see the disciples desert him.  I do not want to hear the crowd shout, “Barabbas.”  I do not want to hear the words, “Crucify him.”  But I must. Jesus did this for me.

ARRESTED AND TRIED – MATTHEW 26:47-67 AND 27:11-31

Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him.  …..  Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God:  Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.  “But I say to all of you:  From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “He has spoken blasphemy!  Why do we need any more witnesses?  Look, now you have heard the blasphemy.  What do you think?”

Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you:  Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?”

“Barabbas,” they answered. …….. They all answered, “Crucify him!” ……. Then he released Barabbas to them.  But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified."

Jesus was stripped and a scarlet robe was put on him.  He had a crown of thorns set on his head and a staff was placed in his right hand.  He was mocked with, “Hail, king of the Jews!”

Jesus was spit on and was struck in the head again and again.

Then they led him away to crucify him.

No!  No!  I do not want to see this.  I want to shut out these visions.  I want to stop my imagination.  I want to cover my ears and not hear the crowd shouting, “Crucify him.”  I want this cup taken from him!  I do not want to see Jesus being flogged … and stripped … and spit on … and hit in the head.  But I must.

I must because Jesus did this for me!  Each scar.  Each drop of blood.  Each pain.  Each humiliation.  For me.

You must also see … and hear … and feel, because Jesus did this for you!

Jesus was arrested

Jesus was led away to be crucified

It was nine in the morning when they crucified him Mark15:25

THEY SLEPT – THEY MISSED IT

GETHSEMANE – MATTHEW 26:36-46

Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”  He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled.  Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.  Stay here and keep watch with me.”

Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me.  Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping.  “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter.  “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.  The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”

When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy.  So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting?  Look, the hour has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners.  Rise!  Let us go!  Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus did not ask much of the disciples as they entered Gethsemane.  All he wanted was for them to sit and keep watch.  As Jesus was overcome with sorrow, they fell asleep.

How alone Jesus must have felt.  He had asked his most trusted disciples to be there for him, to comfort him, to pray with him.  The disciples slept.  They missed the opportunity to keep watch with Jesus.

How quiet it must have been as Jesus prayed.  The only sound breaking through the darkness was his voice.  Did he pray in a whisper?  Did he put special emphasis on the words My Father?  The disciples slept.  They missed the Son praying to His Father.

Jesus fell to the ground and prayed to His Father.  Jesus asked for the cup to be taken and then said may your will be done.  Three times Jesus prayed.  Three times Jesus freely agreed to do the will of his Father.  The disciples slept.  They missed Jesus submitting to the will of His Father.

And then it was no longer quiet.  The hour had come.  The betrayer was there.  The disciples woke up.

The disciples slept

Jesus prayed

May your will be done

Jesus was arrested

 JESUS AND HIS OWN

THE LAST SUPPER – MATTHEW 26:17-35 AND JOHN 13

On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”

He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says:  My appointed time is near.  I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’ “  So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.

Matthew 26:17-19

It was just before the Passover Festival.  Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father.  Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.  Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;

John 13:1-3

How easily we find an excuse not to go to church.  It is snowing!  It is too hot!  The kids/grandkids have a ball game.  I went the last two Sundays.  Jesus did NOT use an excuse to skip the Passover meal.

There was no excuse for not celebrating Passover!  The priests were trying to find a way to kill Jesus, but they would carry on the Jewish traditions.  Judas would betray him, but that was no reason to not prepare for this Festival of Unleavened Bread.  The disciples asked where they were to make preparations.  No problem!  A certain man had a place.  Of course he did!

The disciples made ready.  They had a lamb killed in the court of the temple, roasted said lamb, provided bitter herbs, laid out the bread, and had the wine ready.  The cloth was laid and everything was ready for this sacred solemn feast.  This Passover would be according to the Law.

Jesus sat down with his twelve disciples.

I wonder what Jesus thought as they began to eat.  Did he look around with sadness?  Did he worry about the disciples?  Did Jesus pray for each disciple as he washed their feet?  Did he take a deep breath before saying he would be betrayed?  Did a tear fall as he said he would be denied?

Too many times we read this part and do not realize the emotions that would have been in the Upper Room.  A tradition was continued.  A disciple sat knowing he was going to betray Jesus.  A disciple vowed he would not deny Jesus.  The disciples felt the hands of Jesus wash their feet.

So many emotions

Tradition

The touch of Jesus’ hands

And then Jesus taught and prayed.

 ANOINTING AND BETRAYAL

ANOINTING – MATTHEW 26:6-13

While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.

Matthew 26:6-7

Oh my gosh!  Can you see her walking in the door?  A woman enters and has something in her hands.  It looks like an alabaster jar and that would mean it contained expensive perfume.  (Today that one jar could be worth $25,000 - $55,000.)  The disciples stare as she breaks the jar and pours the perfume on Jesus’ head.  What should have been a relaxing time of eating, joking, eating, teaching, eating, and telling stories quickly turned into finger pointing and accusations of waste.

The disciples were indignant.  HOW DARE SHE?  How dare she what?  This jar of perfume was hers!  It could have been her dowry or her inheritance, but it was hers.  And she humbly gave everything she had to honor Jesus.  Can you see her lower her head as the disciples condemn her for waste?  Can you see the tears form in her eyes as she holds the empty jar?

Can you see her fall to her knees as Jesus says, “Why are you bothering this woman?  She has done a beautiful thing to me.  ….. Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

Can you see the disciples ashamed for their judgment of this woman?

BETRAYAL – MATTHEW 26:14-16

Then one of the Twelve – the one called Judas Iscariot – went to the chief priests and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?”  So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver.  From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.

How this passage breaks my heart.  Judas Iscariot was chosen by Jesus.  He walked with Jesus.  He heard Jesus teach.    He saw a women anoint Jesus.  He went to the priests.

Do you see Judas walking toward the chief priests?  Do you see them looking at each other and wondering what this disciple of Jesus wanted?  Do you hear Judas asking for money?  Do you hear the sound of 30 pieces of silver being counted?

Extreme opposites

Anointing and Betrayal

Generosity and Greed

And now -

The disciples make preparations for Passover

 GOTCHA

How do you put a giraffe into a refrigerator?

Open the refrigerator, put the giraffe in, and close the door.

How do you put an elephant into a refrigerator?

Open the refrigerator, take out the giraffe, put in the elephant, and close the door.

So begins a series of questions.  According to the results, 90% of professionals got all questions wrong, but many preschoolers got several correct answers.  Why?  Pre-schoolers still use their natural creativity while the business professionals have “learned” to think logically, to over complicate issues and see problems using previously learned mental models.

This quiz would be considered a “gotcha” quiz.

GOTCHA:  An instance of accomplishing a tricky idea or overcoming a difficult obstacle.

The Herodians, Pharisees, and the Sadducees had a problem.  Jesus was a difficult obstacle to their agenda and they tried to remove this obstacle with tricky ideas.  They would ask Jesus questions to discredit him.  They wanted to have a gotcha moment and do high fives.  There was only one problem with their plan.  Jesus did not cooperate.

GOTCHA

Matthew 22:15-45

The Herodians, who supported Herod, tried to trap Jesus by asking if it was right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not.  Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

When they heard this, they were amazed.  So they left him and went away.

Herodians 0  ---   Jesus 1

The Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, thought for sure their question would stop Jesus.  “Teacher,” they said, “Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for him. ……”  Their question became a series of what if this and what if that and ended with, “Finally, the woman died.  Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?”

Before answering, I can see Jesus shaking his head and giving an eye roll.  “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. …..  He is not the God of the dead but of the living.”

When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.

Sadducees 0   ---   Jesus 1

If you look in the shadows, you will find the Pharisees.  They are in shock that the difficult obstacle is still there, but their ego is really big.  They knew they had the perfect question for Jesus.  After all, they had an expert in the law.  Stepping up, the expert tested Jesus:  “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

Can you see the expert giving Jesus a smug smile?  Can you see Jesus looking the expert in the eye and then glancing at each Pharisee?  Jesus replied:  “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’  This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Pharisees 0  ---   Jesus 1

By now, everyone would be looking at the Pharisees and I bet they wanted to escape.  But, slipping away did not happen.  While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, “What do you think about the Messiah?  Whose son is he?” ………..

No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.

Pharisees 0   ---  Jesus 1

I wonder if Jesus’ disciples were standing around giving high fives.  Even though tricky questions were used to overcome a difficult obstacle, there was no “gotcha” moment.

Questions asked --- Questions answered

Herodians, Sadducees, Pharisees 0  ---   Jesus 4

Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples.

Then he went to the home of Simon the Leper.

 GLORY AND ANGER

GLORY – MATTHEW 21:1-11

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethpage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. …..”

When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”

The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

Matthew 21:1-part of 2, 10-11

We all know this part of the Easter Story.  Every year the children wave palm branches and we hear the word Hosanna.  BUT – today I want you to think about the people in the crowd.  Some knew Jesus was a prophet and I am sure others had seen him heal and heard him teach.  Most likely, those are the ones that were placing their cloaks on the ground.  What about the others?

Have you ever been to a parade?  Some have a blast and find great joy as floats and bands go by.  Others laugh and point to flaws on the floats.  A few watch and wish they were in the parade.  And some stand on the sidelines, making snide and sarcastic comments.  And some are getting very upset.

“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”

Luke 19:38-39

ANGER –MATTHEW 21:12-17 AND LUKE 19:45-48

Then he entered the temple area and began driving out those who were selling.  ”It is written,” he said to them, “ ‘My house will be a house of prayer’; but you have made it ‘a den of robbers’ “

Every day he was teaching at the temple.  But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.  Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words.

Luke 19:45-48

I bet you thought I was going to point out that Jesus had righteous anger as he got after those buying and selling.  BUT – let’s follow the money.  This was in the temple area.  Exactly who controlled this area?  Bingo!

Can you picture the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the leaders rubbing their hands together in anticipation of the day’s take as they watched exorbitant rates of exchange being charged foreigners?  Can you see the gleam in their eye as another animal was declared unfit and a temple approved animal was sold?  Can you see the anger in their eyes as Jesus turned over the tables?

HOW DARE HE?  This must be stopped!  Miracles.  Healing.  Now this.  The chief priests, teachers of the law, and the leaders could feel their power slipping away and they were angry.  Angry enough to kill.

And he left them and went out of the city to Bethany, where he spent the night.

Matthew 21:17

Jesus rode the lowly donkey and heard, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

Jesus healed the blind and lame and received praise from the lips of children and infants.

Jesus rested.

The Pharisees test Jesus with a question.

 FOR THE THIRD TIME …

Jesus and his disciples were headed to Jerusalem for Passover.

PASSOVER (from Passover website link)

In Hebrew, Passover is known as Pesach, which means “to pass over”, because G-d passed over the Jewish homes when killing the Egyptian firstborn on the very first Passover eve.  Pesach is a time of celebration and commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt.  Six hundred thousand adult males, plus many more women and children, left Egypt on that day and began the trek to Mount Sinai and their birth as G-d’s chosen people.

In ancient times, the observance included the sacrifice of the paschal lamb, which was roasted and eaten at the Seder on the first night of the holiday.  This was the case until the Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed in the 1st century.  Pesach is observed by avoiding leaven, and highlighted by the Seder meals that include four cups of wine, eating matzah and bitter herbs, and retelling the story of the Exodus.

<   <   <   <      >   >   >

I do believe the disciples were hard of hearing or maybe hard of understanding.  Jesus had told them exactly what was going to happen.

Matthew 16:21-23:  Jesus predicted his death and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.  “Never, Lord!” he said.  “This shall never happen to you!”  As we know, this did not go as Peter expected.  Jesus called him Satan!

Matthew 17:22-23:  While in Galilee, Jesus again told them the Son of Man will be betrayed, killed, and on the third he will be raised to life.  The disciples were filled with grief.

He told them a third time in Matthew 20:17-19

Now as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside and said to them, “We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.  They will condemn him to death and will turn him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified.  On the third day he will be raised to life!”

This time the scripture does not say how the disciples reacted.  If you read the next few verses, you will see the disciples were more upset about a pushy mother trying to get her sons the best seats in heaven than they were over what Jesus had told them.  They did not understand.

Why was Jesus trying so hard to get them to understand?

Jesus knew what was going to happen to him, but he also knew what was going to happen to the disciples.  This means the answer is simple:  Jesus wanted them to be prepared.

Jesus used words that can cause fear – betrayed, condemn, death, mocked, flogged, and crucified – BUT by using these words, the disciples realized Jesus knew exactly what was going to happen.  Jesus knew he would suffer.  The disciples saw that Jesus was not running from the suffering.

Jesus used words that gave great hope and comfort –three days and raised to life.  These words helped the disciples realize suffering and death is not the end.  It is only the beginning of eternity.

Jesus explained, in Matthew 20:28:  “just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many,”

Jesus knew exactly what was going to happen.

He has prepared his disciples for the suffering.

He has assured them of the resurrection.

He is approaching Jerusalem.
