SURPRISE

How long can a minute be?  I wanted to walk out the door, but the Sabbath was not over.  I had not stayed at the tomb to weep.  The Sabbath would begin shortly and I had to go home and wait.   I have wept.  Tears that came from my very soul.  Now I wait.  Will it ever be dawn?

Everyone saw me as a danger, except him.  It was not my fault that I was possessed.  Then I met Jesus and he cured me of seven demons.  Can you imagine having seven demons controlling you?  Others saw my actions.  Jesus saw my soul.  Jesus … Jesus changed my life.  I joined some other women.  We followed and supported Jesus and the disciples.  Now we would serve Jesus in one more way.  We would anoint his body with spices and perfumes.

The sun is coming up!  I can go now!!!!!

Turning to the other women, I asked, “How will we move the stone?  Maybe some of the disciples will be there.  I would think they would be there.”  One of the women shook her head, “They are hiding and we will have to keep watch.  The chief priests and the Pharisees convinced Pilate to put guards at the tomb.”

I look around at the other women.  Each has their own reasons for loving Jesus.  Each had been changed from how society saw them and how Jesus saw them.   How do I explain being a woman?  Young women are cared for by their parents and very few have control over their future.  As wives, we are chattel.  We are to serve our husbands.  As widows, we are fortunate if we have sons who can and will provide for our needs.  At each stage of women’s lives, they are told they are worthless.  They have no value.  And then Jesus …..

Jesus looked into my eyes and I saw … I saw love.  How could Jesus, the Son of God, love me?  I looked again.  I saw love.  I saw a love that would last an eternity.  I saw a love that said I was valuable.  I saw a love that said I had worth.

As we approached the tomb, we became quiet.  Each woman was trying to stay strong.  Each woman was ----- In an instant, my heart skipped a beat.  THE STONE WAS ROLLED AWAY!  Slowly – each step taking me closer – I looked into the tomb …….

SCRIPTURES USED – As you read these scriptures, you will notice each has different women at the tomb.  I have used Mary Magdalene and tried to put myself in her place.  As you read these scriptures, really think about the women who went to the tomb.  What would they have felt?  What would they have been thinking?  Were they afraid?  Were they confused?  How much courage would it have taken to make that walk to the tomb?

WHERE DO WE GO?

When the Roman officer who stood facing him saw how he had died, he exclaimed, “This man truly was the Son of God!”
     Mark 15:39

Jesus died on a cross.  Even a centurion realized Jesus was the Son of God.  Even a centurion realized this was no ordinary man.

Jesus was not an ordinary man, but he was dead.

JESUS IS DEAD ….  WHERE DO WE GO?

JESUS IS DEAD.  Jesus is dead and we are devastated.  What now?  We were not prepared for this.  We had thought ……..  Jesus is dead.  Where do we go?  We thought he was the way to the Father.  We thought ….  Jesus is dead.

We had walked beside him, as he carried his cross.  We heard him talk with God, as he hung on the cross.  We thought ….  But where do we go?  What will they do with the body?  We thought …

Just a man.  BUT the centurion had seen the truth.  He now knew Jesus was the Son of God.  He knew he would have to forever live with his part in nailing Jesus to the cross.  He had heard, “Father, forgive them.”  He had thought this was just a man, but now he knew the truth and he wondered..

Joseph was a man who faced reality.  Jesus was dead and the body needed to be buried.  Would he be allowed to take Jesus’ body and lay it in a tomb?

It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath).  So as evening approached, Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body.  Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead.  Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died.  When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph.  So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock.  Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.  Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where he was laid.

     Mark 15:42-47

I have taken great liberty as I tried to put myself in the place of the centurion.  I do not know if he would have driven the nails.  If not actually driving the nails, he would have been watching.  BUT once he realized that Jesus was the Son of God, he would have been changed.  He would have hurt as the nails were removed.  He would have wondered why Jesus did not save himself.

I wonder if he found the answer to his questions.  Did the centurion seek an answer?  Did he discover that God allowed his Son to die so he could have eternal life?  Did he celebrate when he found out that the tomb was empty?

I also took liberty when trying to understand how those who loved Jesus, those who walked beside him, those who watched him hang upon the cross felt.  BUT it came to me that they would be confused.  What now?  They had not understood when Jesus told them all this would happen.  What now?  Where would the body lie?  How would they get the spices on the body?  Where would they go?  Going home seemed ….  empty.  Jesus is dead.  What now?  They could not go back, back before they knew Jesus.  BUT how do they move forward?  Jesus is dead.  What now?

THE CENTURION

And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”

                  Mark 15:39

Just another man.  Just another crucifixion.  Just a few nails and a hammer.  Just … another day.

The centurion had watched as Jesus was beaten.  He heard the remarks.  He heard the sarcasm when someone called him ‘King of the Jews.’  The centurion was confused.  When the crowd yelled, “Give us Barabbas.”, Jesus was silent.  Why had he not proclaimed his innocence?  He did not yell at those beating him.  One time he did talk to the crowd, as he was going toward the place called the Skull.  He did not try to remove the crown of thorns.  Jesus was entirely different than any man he had seen crucified.  The centurion began to realize this day was not a normal day.

The centurion continued with his duties.  Others cast lots for his clothes.  People walking by made fun of Jesus.  He heard Jesus talking with the thieves.  He heard Jesus talk to his mother.  He heard Jesus cry out and then cry out again.  It was as if he were calling on God.  He called him Father.  And then …

And then Jesus died.  The centurion felt the earthquake.  He saw Jesus die.

With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.  The temple curtain was torn in two from top to bottom.  And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”

This was not an ordinary day.  The darkness and the earthquake had never happened during a crucifixion.  The temple curtain had never torn from top to bottom.  No one, on a cross, had ever called out “Father, forgive them” and “Father, into thy hands”.

Jesus died on a cross.  Even a centurion realized Jesus was the Son of God.  Even a centurion realized this was no ordinary man.

Jesus was not an ordinary man, but he was dead.

IN AN INSTANT

Plans.  Oh, how we make plans.  Oh, how plans change in an instant.  Life changes in the time it takes to breathe in and breathe out.  Life is so quiet this side of that breath and frightening and chaotic the other side.

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.  For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

Matthew 25:34-36

This week I am not writing a blog.  Instead, I am asking you to invite a stranger into your heart.  I am asking you to shower a young girl with cards.  A young girl whose life changed in the instant a gas grill blew up and burned her from her head to her knees.  I do not know Rosetta Lengacher, but compassion comes from our hearts and does not require we know a person firsthand.  I am asking you to do two things:

First, please pray for this young Amish girl as her body heals.  Pray for those who are changing the bandages.  Pray for the family as they watch a loved one suffer.

Second, because of the painful recovery, I would like us to put some joy into her life by sending Rosetta a card or letter.  Our hope is that cards will lift the spirits of this young girl.  Cards from people she does not know and cards that show that the love of God extends from doors across many states and from doors around the world to her door.

The parents have given us permission to use her name and address, as we join together to support a stranger, a child of God.  Please send cards to:

THANK YOU.

PS: If your church has a prayer chain, please have them post information on the card shower.

THE LORD NEEDS IT

You came home long enough to drop off the groceries and then you will be off to have lunch with a friend.  Looking out the window, you see two men getting ready to take your car.  “Hey! What are you doing?  That is my car!”

The one man says, “The Lord needs it.”

“Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden.  Untie it and bring it here.  If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’ ”

Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them.  As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”

They replied, “The Lord needs it.”

     Luke 19:30-34

“Almost done.  I need candles and everything on my list will be marked off.  Now to go home and finish the preparations for Passover.”  Looking up from your list, you see two men waiting.  Waiting as if they are waiting for someone, but they don’t know who.  They turn and see you holding a shopping list.  “We have a need for a place to hold Passover.”

“If you get in my car, I will take you to the room above our garage.  It is all furnished.  You can make preparations there.”

Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.  Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”

“Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.

He replied,
“As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you.  Follow him to the house that he enters, and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’  He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished.  Make preparations there.”

They left and found things just as Jesus had told them.  So they prepared the Passover.”

Luke 22:7-13

Wow!  What trust.  Off goes the colt.  A room offered immediately.  Would that happen today? Are we so different from the man with the colt and the man with the room?  What would you do?

BUT — (all true examples)

  • A boy began to pass out blankets to the homeless.
  • Many pay for other’s meals.
  • A stranger listened as a 15 year old vented about life.
  • You were headed home and a stranger stopped to help when your car broke down.
A co-worker, having a rough day, received a compliment which changed her day.
  • A police officer sat with a mother, whose son had died, for a couple of hours until her other child could get home.
  • The woman was struggling with her sacks of groceries when a stranger offered to carry them.
  • A paper boy shoveled the snow for an elderly woman.

These examples could go on and on.  “The Lord needs it.”  This does not only apply to a colt or a room.  It applies to our daily lives.  We just have to open our eyes.  We have to change how we look around us.  Does someone need a blanket?  Food?  A friend?  How can we provide?

The Lord needs it.  One of God’s children needs it.

 HOW DID I MISS HER?

Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying.

While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader.  “Your daughter is dead,” he said.  “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.”

Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus,
“Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”

When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child’s father and mother.  Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her.  “Stop wailing,” Jesus said.  “She is not dead but asleep.”

They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead.  But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!”  Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up.  Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat.  Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.

          Luke 8:41-42, 49-56

I am a mother, yet when I read or hear these verses, I think of the father.  BUT, while the father went to find Jesus, the mother waited.  How did I miss her?

AND SHE WAITED

I waited and worried and heard them say my child was dead.  Dead?  How could she be dead?  My child!  I would no longer see her smile.  Never again would I hear her say the word… the word … mother.  Oh, my God… my heart is breaking.  Where is Jairus?  He must not have found Jesus.  It cannot be.  My daughter cannot be dead.

I heard a noise.  The crowd was looking up the street.  Jairus must be coming.  Hurrying to the door, I wondered, “How will I tell him his daughter is no longer?”  My heart was beating so hard, I thought it would burst.  Jesus is here too….  But too late.

When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child’s father and mother.

Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her.  “Stop wailing,” Jesus said.  “She is not dead but asleep.”

As they entered the door, Jesus seemed calm.  Does he not see my grief?  Go into the house?  No.  I do not want to see….  But…Jairus takes my hand and says, “Come and do not fear.  Our daughter will be alive.”  Trust?  Alive?  But how?

I am only standing because Jairus is holding me up.  Jesus is not praying for my child.  I thought… “pray, pray!”  My heart almost stops beating…. why is Jesus not praying?  And then, ever so gently, I see Jesus take her hand and say,
“My child, get up!”  Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up.

I turned to Jairus and whispered, “Our daughter is alive.”  I looked at Jesus in absolute astonishment.  My daughter is alive.  The touch and words of Jesus restored my joy.

As I looked from Jesus to my daughter, who was standing up, I heard Jesus telling us to give her something to eat.  Oh ..  of course..  food.  What was I standing here for?  I must prepare her favorite food.  Food?  Of course, I must go --- my daughter will be hungry.

I was rushing to prepare the food when Jesus spoke,
“You are not to tell anyone what had happened.”

I thought, “Not tell?  How am I to do that?  I want to tell the world.”  I will worry about that later.  I must feed my daughter.  My very much alive daughter.

HOW DID I MISS HER?

I know one thing.  I am glad I see her now.  I can see her eyes.  They are bright and no longer contain tears.  I can see her skin.  It is glowing from having seen the Glory of God.  I can see her lips.  They are curled in a smile of absolute joy.  I can see her hands.  They are preparing food for her daughter, who was awakened from sleep.  I can hear her whispering, “My daughter lives.”  Whispering, because she was not supposed to tell.

 VALENTINE’S DAY

What are the odds I will receive flowers, candy, or a card on Valentine’s Day.  Hubby and I have been that route and decided we do not need to celebrate with anything except love.  I don’t need candy and a card is set out and then tossed.  We have moved and believe me, that box of cards that you hold dear will not make a move somewhere along the line.  Flowers — Maybe if he reads this blog.  (No dear, you do not have to rush out and get me flowers.  Really, you don’t.  No, I mean it.)

Valentine’s Day, Saint Valentine’s Day, or Feast of Saint Valentine is celebrated February 14.  Originating  as a Christian feast day honoring a martyr named Valentine, it has became a cultural and commercial celebration of romance.

How many Valentine cards are exchanged just in the United States?  The latest data shows 145 MILLION cards.  145 million!  That is only the tip of the iceberg.  Those cards will infuse $1.4 billion into the economy.  Not everyone sends cards, but they still want to proclaim their love.  Never fear, they have options.     Candy will fly off the shelves at $2.5 billion and restaurants will entertain and feed lovers at $5.4 billion.  In case you might be wanting to make big brownie points, buy a sparkly.  $6.5 billion will be spent on jewelry.

That is a lot of money to say, “I love you.”

Believe me, we do not spend big bucks on Valentine’s Day, but hubby tells me he loves me in so many ways and not just on one day.  He tells me by his actions.  Years ago he took over vacuuming and doing dishes.  Actions.  He sits on the couch and holds me and we watch TV.  Actions.  He reads my blogs and says it is good.  Actions.  He checks the floor for dropped jigsaw puzzle pieces.  Actions.

—————————————

How do we show love to God?  And not just on one day?

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

‭‭Romans‬ ‭12‬:‭1‬

As a living sacrifice … Living is an action word.  (Taken from Romans 12:9-21). Take action:

Be sincere

Cling to what is good

Love and honor others, live in harmony

Be zealous, joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer, practice hospitality

Bless those who persecute you

Rejoice and mourn with others

And other actions you can look up.

The point is that LOVE is an action word.  Actions that are pleasing to God.

LOVE is an action word.  It does not require candy, flowers, or jewelry.  It requires a simple, honest, “I love you.”

(Honest dear. You do not need to rush out and buy me flowers.  Really.  You do not need to.)

THE DOLL

Over the years, I have had numerous jobs.  One of my favorites was as an auction cashier.  I love numbers and there was no feeling like ending the auction by balancing to the penny.  When I decided I was tired of being too hot, too cold, and using the port-a-pot, I missed that challenge.  BUT I also missed the magic moments that sprang up.

It was a large sale and people were everywhere.  Some were checking out the old farm equipment.  Some were looking over the dishes.  Some were looking in the boxes that would sell for 50 cents.  You never knew.  There could be a prize buried at the bottom of the box.  The gem you had been looking for.

Then there were the little girls.  They had found a doll with three faces.  One face was smiling, one was crying, and one was asleep.  They were mesmerized, as one after another took turns making the face go from happy to sad.  Sad to sleeping.  Sleeping to happy.  One girl cradled the doll, holding it close to her heart.  Would she be able to talk her parents into buying this doll for her?

Finally, the auctioneers were ready to sell the doll and standing front and center was the little girl.  She did not take her eyes off the doll.  The ring man picked up the doll.  He made a big deal of turning the face from happy to sad to sleeping.  He played to the crowd.  The auctioneer called for a bid.  $1.  Then nothing.  The doll was not old.  The doll was not valuable.  Maybe, $5.

The auctioneer called a $5 bid.. then $10 .. then $15.  People stopped looking at other items and turned their gaze to the doll.  What was going on?  $15?  No .. now $20, $30, $40 and then $50.  Everyone finally realized the auctioneers were having fun.  There was no $50 bid.  I wrote $5 on the bid sheet and put the auctioneer’s number on the sale.

BUT there was a little girl, standing front and center, who had not taken her eyes off the doll.  That is when the magic happened.  The ring man turned to the little girl and handed the doll to her.  She reached out, took the doll, and gently drew it to her heart.

-----------

Now think … You are the doll and Jesus is the little girl.  Jesus is right there, standing front and center.  He has paid the price for your soul.  He will gently draw you to his heart.

TIME TO GET UP

I was awake, but it wasn’t light and it wasn’t dark.  It was that time between the two.  Dawn.  Should I get up or wait until the sun chases away the dark?  Waiting won out and, before I knew it, it was daylight.  It was daylight, because, as I waited, I fell back to sleep.  And when I woke up, it was … let’s just say later than I usually head for the coffee..

Sleeping in is not something I enjoy.  It makes the day too short.  It seems the rest of the day is rushed or I decide something can wait till “tomorrow” and then realize “tomorrow” is getting filled with more than “tomorrow” will hold.  I also do not like a list of things that need to be done.  But, this morning, it was still dark and I went  back  to  zzzz.

I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles.  I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.

Acts 26:17-18

Although Jesus was speaking to Saul, soon to be Paul, isn’t that what I am to be doing?  Waking up from the darkness to the light?  Aren’t I to be in the light so I can, with God’s help, overcome the power of Satan?  Aren’t I to help others find the light?

Sleeping in?  Am I like the people of the church in Sardis?

To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.  I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.  Wake up!  Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God.  Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent.  But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.

Revelation 3:1-3 NIV

I do not want to be like the church in Sardis.  I want to be alive on the outside and the inside.  I want to be awake so my faith does not die.  I want things to be completed.  I DO NOT WANT --- NO, I WILL NOT BE ASLEEP WHEN JESUS COMES.  My faith will keep me awake and ready.

———————————

I do not sleep in often.  There is way too much to do.  Besides, if I sleep in, it messes with my nap time.  I saw that smile.  Have a joyous day.

JONAH – HOW DID I END UP HERE?

The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai:  “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”

But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish.  He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port.  After paying the fare, he went abroad and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD.

                        Jonah 1:1-3

There was Jonah – can you see him – sitting below deck, with a “I got out of there” smirk on his face.  He gloated, “I guess I showed the LORD.”  “Go to Nineveh,” he said.  “Preach against its wickedness,” he said.  Seeing the coffee pot, he decided to have a cup of coffee and enjoy the ride.

Then it got a bit windy.  Just a bit…  Okay, it was a great wind and violent storm, which tossed the ship around till the sailors thought the ship was going to break up.  The sailors were tossing cargo overboard.  They were sure they were going to perish.  Jonah, on the other hand, was sound asleep.

Cliff notes:  The captain woke him up.  Jonah admitted he was the cause of their problems.  “Throw me overboard,” he told them.  When trying to save Jonah and the ship failed, over the side went Jonah.  Of course, that big ole fish thought Jonah looked like an appetizer and swallowed him right up.  The belly of the fish was a bit boring and after three days and three nights, Jonah realized his mistake and he remembered the LORD.

I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the LORD.’ “

And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

Jonah 2: last part of 9 and 10

Cliff notes 2:  We know this story so well.  Jonah went to Nineveh.  He told them to straighten up.  They did.  Jonah was mad because they turned from their evil ways, God relented, and did not destroy them.  He sat down east of the city and pouted.  God provided him shade … until a worm chewed the plant and it withered.  Jonah got so hot and angry that he wanted to die.

But the LORD said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow.  It sprang up overnight and died overnight.  And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left – and also many animals?”

     Jonah 4:10-11

Jonah had one job: to warn the people of Nineveh to repent.  Was his reason for running away a good one?  “I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity.”  Well, doesn’t that beat all!  Jonah didn’t want to go to the people of Nineveh because he knew God would be gracious and compassionate.

But the LORD replied, “Is it right for you to be angry?”

I have been Jonah.  My parents did not go to church.  My mother was raised in church.  My dad was not and he drove a semi, so often he was not home on Sunday. They sent us kids to church, but we went alone.  Oh, they came to the Christmas program, but that was about it.  Each Sunday, we would put on our Sunday best, walk to church, attend Sunday School and worship, and then walk home.

Many, many years later, my mother started attending church.  She would tell about receiving hugs.  And I would remember other kids walking into church with their parents.  She would tell about attending Sunday School.  And I would remember carrying Sunday School crafts home before I could show them off.  She would praise Pastor Ernie.  And I became Jonah.

I was mad that mother started attending church.  WHY DIDN’T SHE GO TO CHURCH WITH US?  Were we not important enough?  WHY DID I RESENT THAT SHE WAS GOING TO CHURCH?  Shouldn’t I have been thrilled that she found a church family?  I would like to say that I resolved these feelings quickly.  Instead, I sat under the hot sun and was angry.

I did finally get out of the hot sun and was thrilled that mother had found her way back to a church where she worshipped a compassionate and forgiving God – because I sure needed compassion and forgiving.

 THE SOUND OF SILENCE

Can you hear the silence?  There are a few people around.  The disciples are there.  Spies sent by the Pharisees and teachers of the law are there.  And it is quiet.  The silence is heavy as people wait for Jesus to speak.  BUT he is silent.  Sorta looking off in the distance.  Watching the children play.  Can you hear the silence?

Of course not.  Jesus was not silent!

Jesus healed the crippled woman and then was not silent on the hypocrisy of the synagogue leader.  “You hypocrites!”  Jesus had compassion.  The synagogue leader had none.  Jesus was not silent!

Jesus did not let the teachers of the law off the hook either.  “They walk around in flowing robes … have the most important seats in the synagogues … devour widow’s houses …”  Jesus warned people to be careful who they believed and followed.  Jesus was not silent!

Jesus spoke out against using the law unjustly.  The teachers of the law and Pharisees were trying to trap Jesus.  He called them out.  “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”  Then Jesus encouraged a sinner to change.  Jesus was not silent!

Jesus was not silent when his house was taken over by money changers.  “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’?  But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’“  Jesus demanded respect for a place of worship.  Jesus was not silent!

Can you hear the silence?  Of course not.  Jesus was not silent!

SILENCE

Silence:  silence toward wrongdoing means supporting it

               silence means yes

silence means being “not in opposition to”

               silence means tolerating and supporting

I used familiar passages to point out that Jesus was not silent.  He spoke up.  So, I wonder.  Are we to be silent?  But, I know the answer.  And the answer is no.  We are called to follow the Word of God and not what is being said and written in the pages of society’s papers and news.

We are called by God to speak against injustice and oppression.  We are called to defend the children and the unborn.  We are called to support family and stand against abuse.  We are called to share our faith in Jesus Christ.

….. and yet … we are silent.

SCRIPTURES USED

The crippled woman:  Luke 13:10-17
