CHANGING SEASONS

As I look out the window, things are changing.  The leaves now look a dusty green.  Some leaves are beginning to turn various shades of red and orange.  It is dark when I wake up.  (Hate that!)  But, at least it is dark when I go to bed.  I do believe fall is fast approaching.

The posts on Facebook range from “Yes, fall is almost here!” to “Oh no.  Summer is almost over.”  I am sure our daughter is saying, “Winter will soon be here.”  Funny how we have a favorite season.  A favorite holiday.  A favorite sport and team.  A favorite …..

Now, I am not sure how this went from changing seasons to favorites, but that is the way my mind works sometimes.  (I heard a few snickers out there about how my mind works.)  We do have favorites and it is a good thing.  Think about it.  How boring would life be if we were all alike?  Wow – I would have no one to argue with.  Everyone would think just like me.

What if we all liked the same color?  Boring!  Besides, the fashion industry would be in big trouble.  What if there was only one genre of books?  I would hate not being able to read a mystery and then a romance.  What if we could all sing on key?  There would be a really big choir with no one listening.

What if we never changed?  Oh?  Back to change now?

God did not create this world to be the same, day in and day out.  He created this world with change built in.  Now that is planning ahead!  He created us to change also.  We are not to stay children.  We are to grow and learn.  Our lives have seasons.  The Bible tells us this in Ecclesiastics:

There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:
a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.

Spring.  Fall.  Winter.  Summer.       Seasons.  Change.  Change.  Change.

Birth.  Death.  Planting.  Harvest.  Weeping.  Laughing.  Keeping.  Throwing away.  War.  Peace.       Seasons.  Change.  Change.  Change.

Part of the problem is we do not like things to change.  Let it stay fall.  Only the old hymns.  I do not want to get old.  My children are leaving home.

Part of the problem is we fear change.  What will I do in the winter?  But that song was written last year.  What will happen next to my body?  I cannot know what my children are doing.

All around you, there is change.  Never fear.  Not everything changes.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.  Hebrews 13:8

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”  Revelation 1:8

As I look at my life, things are changing.  But with an unchanging God as my guide, I can handle it.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Hubby and I walked through a National Cemetery.  It was very moving.  We felt humbled that so many served to preserve our freedom and defend freedom around the world.  As we looked around, we saw row after row after row of white stones.

Each stone had a name and rank.  Each stone represented a time in that person’s life when they were willing to leave their family to defend freedom.

Along the back, a wall contained the remains of those who chose cremation.  Again, a sober reminder that service to our country comes with a price.

Earlier, on our trip, we had seen a monument to “the glorious memory of our native sons who paid the supreme sacrifice” and “also in everlasting gratitude to those who daring to die, survived.”  Those words came back to me as we saw dates that indicated some died in battle and some died many years later.

As we were walking to another section, I saw them.  Here – in this place of honor.  What were they doing here?  As they came closer, I knew my first impression was correct.  As they came closer, it was even worse than I thought!

They looked 19 – 22 years old.  She had pink hair.  Not a soft pink used as an accent.  Bright pink!  And the clothes she had on.  Really!  Talk about not being respectful.  The piercings did not help.  He had on baggy pants, but to his credit, his underwear was not showing.  Of course there was a chain from a belt loop going to somewhere that made no sense.  Punky hair and things stuck in each ear and his nose.  His nose.  Then they were beside me.  Then they spoke.

Looking at me with genuine eyes, he said, “We love to walk here.  It is so peaceful and such an honor to realize they served for us.”

And with that, they walked on down the path.  And with that, I apologized to God for judging these two fine young people.

{ { { { {  } } } } }

Every sports page.  Every sports show.  Every sports report – we hear:  Colin Kaepernick kneels during National Anthem.  It has become an epidemic.  You would think no one stands for the National Anthem.  You would think no one shows respect.  You would think ….

Let me tell you:  THAT IS NOT TRUE!!  Just last week we were at the Half Century of Progress when the American Flag was raised and the National Anthem sung.  When it was announced that it was time to raise the flag, every golf cart, ATV and electric cart of any kind was immediately turned off.  All conversation stopped.  Seed corn hats were removed.  This farm show spreads over 400 acres and the only sound you could hear were the first notes of the National Anthem.

120’ X 65’ flag flying high between two cranes

A football player making gazillions might not respect the country that gives him the opportunity to throw a ball around but those that get their hands dirty in the soil sure do.  One football player makes the news.  Thousands of quiet farmers do not.

{ { { { {  } } } } }

It seems we all trust our first impressions.  We know we are right.  But are we?

CHOSEN, A PATH AND PRAYERS

Our Sunday School class is studying Ephesians and so far, we have discussed chapter one.  Chosen, a path and prayers are words that describe part of this chapter.

CHOSEN

Know what it says?  It says we were chosen “before the foundation of the world.”  Now if that does not make us stand up and shout and jump with joy and --- realize we are not an afterthought.  God didn’t make the earth and sun and moon and plants and sky and sea and animals and air and then say, “Wonder what I can create now?  Color?  No.  I think there are plenty of colors.  The number of animals is perfect.  Trees are looking good.  They will look amazing when the leaves change color.  There is that color thing again.  Sure glad I added color.  But there seems to be something missing.  What could it be?  Man I just think ….. Man?  Now that would be an interesting idea.”

NO!  God had us in his heart before he created the foundation of the world.  This ole planet is a miracle in how everything works together.  It was all planned out.  And we are not an afterthought.  We are blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.

CHOSEN – what a word.  Chosen:  selected, picked, preferred, wanted, desired.  And, are you ready?  You are chosen.

Now you can stand up and shout and jump with joy.  YOU ARE CHOSEN ! ! !

A PATH

The next verse says, “having predestined us to adoption.”  The word predestined seems to cause confusion.  Thankfully, our minister explained the original meaning of the word predestined, as used in verse 5.  It means God set us on a path.  Now how absolutely cool is that.  First we are chosen and then we are put on a path, although we do seem to have a bit of trouble staying on that path.  And we have to decide – make a choice – to follow the path to being adopted by God.

The disciples wondered how they were to know the way.  Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.  John 14:6

Time to let all that excitement out.  Not only are you CHOSEN, there is a PATH and now you know the way.

PRAYERS

Paul told the Ephesians he did “not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers.”  Wow.  Double Wow!  Paul prayed for them.  Can you imagine how that made them feel?  Here is the number-one-spreading-the-Good News-guy-of-the-hour and he was praying for them.  While he was in prison!!

And this was not some general, feel good prayer.  Paul prayed they would have wisdom.  And knowledge.  And hope.  And know the riches of the glory of God’s inheritance.  And know of the exceeding greatness of God’s power toward them.  And that Christ is over all.  Now that is praying!

We so easily pray for others.  Willing pray for others.

Now think about someone praying for you.  Placing your name upon God’s ears.  Does that make your heart leap with joy?  Make you feel humble?  Make you feel grateful?

= = = = = = = = = =

Celebrate each day and remember:

YOU ARE CHOSEN
JESUS IS THE PATH TO BEING ADOPTED BY GOD

PRAY FOR OTHERS and INVITE OTHERS TO PRAY FOR YOU

THREE PEOPLE

A friend asked this question today on Facebook:   What three people, living or dead, would you invite to dinner?

I did not hesitate.  I immediately knew.

PICK ONE:  My grandma.  I am sure I have mentioned her before.  She lived with us in the winters and grandkids took turns staying with her in the summer.  I absolutely loved – love – that lady.  I never saw her wear anything except a dress.  She made great mush.  She loved us.  She knew her Bible!  Even those hard to pronounce names.  In her, I saw faith.  A deep faith that was true and honest.  She lived knowing she would pass from today to forever.

Yes, I would invite my grandma.  I would hug her and then I would thank her.  Thank her for building a foundation under me, one day at a time. And I never realized she was doing it.  I would invite my grandma.  I would seat her at the head of the table.

PICK TWO:  Mary, the mother of Jesus.  Did you just make a questioning face?  Did you wonder why Mary and not Jesus?  I know about Jesus.  I know what He can do for me.

What I want to know is how she felt when the angel told her she was picked.  Of all the women in the world, Mary was picked.  Wow, does that ever beat being picked first for dodge ball.  I want to hear stories of Jesus as a baby.  When did he walk?  Was he always good?  Did he torment his siblings?  Was there a food he refused to eat?  Did he do his chores when told?  Was he a good carpenter?  Was he excited to begin His mission?  How were you able to stand at the foot of the Cross?  I would seat Mary across from my grandma.

PICK THREE:  Now, if you were surprised when I picked Mary, you better hold onto your hat for pick three.  I would place this person between grandma and Mary.  I would sit this person right there where these two women – so strong in their faith – could turn to hear the answer to one question:   Do you still believe what you wrote?

I wonder how Charles Darwin would answer.

What three people would you pick?

TIME STANDS STILL

I have read The Noticer and The Noticer Returns, by Andy Andrews, a number of times.  In The Noticer Returns, Jones is speaking, “Time is an odd thing.  Christmas Eve for most adults lasts about as long as most other nights, but for an eight-year-old, on that particular night of the year, time slows to a crawl.”

A second is a second.  A minute is a minute.  An hour is an hour.  These are all true statements, but they are also not true.  Or, they seem not true.

A MILLION STARS
One night, years ago, Bill and I were in a very small and extremely interesting town - Ennis, Montana.  Would you like to fish for rainbow or brown trout? This is the place.  Want to eat breakfast with the locals?  You will need to arrive early at the drug store or you will not find a seat.  Want to have time stand still?  It can happen here.

We were staying in a place on the outside of town.  It had been a long day, one last sip of water and off to bed.  At about three o’clock, I made a trip to the little room and headed back to bed.  Then I saw them.  STARS!!!  A sky full of stars.  I stepped outside and time stood still.  For a brief moment, I was the only person in the universe and I was surrounded with stars.  They seemed so close I thought I could touch them.  They were so bright.  And quiet.  For a brief moment, time stood still and I was given the gift of wonder.  Time resumed and I woke Bill up, dragged him outside and we stared at heaven.

BESIDE A HOSPITAL BED
Our daughter has had a number of surgeries.  The family is always given a minute to tell the patient goodbye.  (Never liked that term.  How about tell the patient you will see them when the surgery is over?)  Anyway, every time I have stood beside that bed, time stood still.  I am sure no one else realized it.  Or maybe it was standing still for them too.  But as time stood still, I had time to take a deep breath.  To prepare.  And, in less than what seemed like an eternity, I was able to turn and walk away.  And time resumed.

A GOOD BOOK
Now there is nothing that can make time stand still like a good book.  Others see the hands on the clock move.  Others see the time go from 1 to 2 to 3.  Not me!  While I am helping Jack Reacher solve a mystery (written by Lee Child) or sit at the coffee shop with Father Tim (Jan Karon, Mitford Series) or crashing through Platform 9 3/4 (Harry Potter, by J.K. Rowling) or accompanying the crippled woman as she walks toward Jesus (The Bible, Luke 13:10-17), time stands still.  When I close the book, you would think I was on the Millennium Falcon and Hans Solo had the pedal to the metal.  When that book snaps shut, time resumes and somehow I have to catch up with the clock.

Time is an odd thing.  Sometimes a minute lasts an eternity and a lifetime seems so brief.  And sometimes, time stands still.  Time stands still so we can see a million stars.  So we can receive the strength we need.  So our imaginations can travel the world.

A DESPERATE CALL

The other day I read a true story, in the Reader's Digest, about a young girl at her wits end. Up till now she thought she had no reason to live. Addiction is rough to overcome. But in the other room there was a reason to try again.  A reason to succeed.  A child.

But how?  Then she remembered a slip of paper her mother had given her.  On that paper was the name of a Christian counselor. She took the paper out and looked at it. She folded it up.  She looked at it again. Maybe it was time she called. She dialed. She waited. A man answered the phone. She could tell he had been asleep.

She began to talk.  Telling her story quickly, the man on the other end of the line listened.  Occasionally, he would acknowledge he was still there.  Finally, she slowed down.  Her voice was calmer.  Her breathing was deeper.  It was then she realized she had talked for a very long time.  From 2 AM until 4 AM, she had told a complete stranger her deepest fears, her worst sins, her addiction.  She told about her child and how this time she must succeed.  She must......

Suddenly, she realized this Christian man had not once judged her. Not once had even talked about God.  She asked, "Why have you not said anything about God?"

The man replied, "I need to tell you something but was afraid you would hang up.  Promise you will not hang up."  She agreed.

"I," the man said, "am not a counselor.  You have the wrong number."

They continued talking.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What would you do if you were the wrong number?  What if, at 2 AM, your phone rang and the voice on the other end said, "My mother gave me your number and I need to talk."

Bear one another's burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2

Would you listen?  Would you encourage?  Would you patiently wait for the person to finish?  To become calm?

So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved,
put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience;
Colossians 3:12

Or would you say, "You have the wrong number."  Hang up.  Go back to sleep?

Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers,
for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.
Hebrews 13:2

What would you do if you were a wrong number?

HOMES

“While you were gone,” my hubby said when I walked in the door, “I looked at the map and think we should leave July 5, for Prince Edward Island (PEI).”  I replied, “Could we make it the 6th?”

July 6 we left and arrived at PEI July 11.  We had tried to travel to PEI twice before, but each time found us falling short of that goal.  Third time is a charm, because we made it across that eight mile bridge.  Funny.  They do not charge you to go to the island.  They charge you to get off the island.

We had an amazing time, met some very nice people, heard stories of life on the island and saw these four houses.  Houses which are not houses.  Let me explain.

Ever wonder about those abandoned houses?  There they sit.  Empty.  Windows broken out.  Doors missing.  No games being played in the yard.  No supper being prepared in the kitchen.  No grass being mowed.  Much labor and love went into that home.  Yet there it sits.  Quiet.  Useless.  No longer a home.  Just an empty building.

Do you recognize this house?  It is a very famous home.  People come from all over the world to visit.  They want to see the Lake of Shining Waters.  They want to see where a young girl, Anne, leapt onto the pages of a book called Anne of Green Gables.  Many people roam from room to room.  You hear laughter.  There are people sitting in the yard.  But – no cattle are in the barn.  No one sleeps in the beds.  No one eats in the kitchen.  This home is now a tourist destination.

I do believe the man that built a church, two houses, a bar and a very large bottle had way too much time on his hands, absolutely did not know how to sit still or had really lousy cable reception.  For sure, he believed in recycling.  He built “bottle” houses.  10,000 – 20,000 bottles in each building.  They are fun to look at and, since it was an overcast day when we visited, I can only imagine how they look when the sun shines through bottles of red.  And green.  And white.  And brown.  There is only one problem.  Other than being funky, fun to look at and draining tourist’s wallets, they are not houses. You cannot live in them.

PEI is known for its potatoes, coastline and lighthouses.  It should also be known for its churches.  We crisscrossed the island north to south and west to east and there are churches EVERYWHERE!  This is – are you ready – Saint Mary’s Church.  It was established in 1902 and is breathtaking.  Around the base of the steeple there are sculptures representing the twelve disciples.  The ceiling is a puzzle of wood stained and cut into a thing of beauty.  This is a historic church.  And it is no longer a church.  No church services are held here.  No candles lit.  No voices united in worship through song.  No communion served.  It is now the home of the Indian River Festival and, for a donation, you can walk through the building.

These buildings remind me of some churches.

THE EMPTY CHURCH – This does not mean no one attends.  It means the church no longer has joy.  It means the church no longer has love.  It is just a place to go for an hour on Sunday morning but holds no true celebrations of Worship.

THE TOURIST DESTINATION – This does not mean there are no regular attenders.  It means the church is more show than worship.  It has become a place to be entertained.  It is a place where you put a small admittance fee in the offering plate and then wait to be told the Gospel with lights and sound.

THE BOTTLE CHURCH – Again, many attend the bottle church.  They love the way the light shines through the window.  There is a window designed so the sun shines on the alter, at exactly the instant the prelude begins.  This church is full of joy.  They sing loudly.  They are thrilled to hear the Good News.  There is only one problem.  It is only the good news they hear.  They do not know what to do when the sun is covered with clouds and the altar does not light up on cue.  They are lost when the world is not rosy and good.

THE NO LONGER A CHURCH – The no longer a church has no pews.  It has no worshipers.  There are no hymns sung.  No communion is served. What once stood tall as a beacon to those seeking and searching – What once represented a desire to build a place where believers could unite in their study of God’s Word – What once invited families to celebrate weddings and births and deaths --- Now opens their doors to antique seekers.  And artist.  And a comedy club.  And become a home for humans instead of the House of God.  And sometimes just sits there empty.  With the steeple tilting, the pews falling apart and even the mice have left because there are no more communion crumbs falling to the floor.

What kind of church do you attend?

What kind of church are you?

Drat.  Now I have to answer the question, “What kind of church am I?”

THE STORM

The storm rolled in
The sirens sounded
The TV warned
The sky turned black
The clouds boiled
The wind blew
The trees danced
The rain fell
The thunder rumbled
The lightening raced
The thunder quieted
The rain ended
The trees stood still
The wind became gentle
The clouds parted
The sky cleared
The TV removed the warning
The sirens were quiet
The storm passed

I wrote this a number of years ago but it so fits the last few weeks.  It seems we cannot get a gentle soaker.  No!  We get downpours.  Wind blowing.  Bit of hail mixed in sometimes.  Water running down the street.  Fields flooded.  Banks overflowing.  Yes, we have had a bit of rain.  One day we had over two and a half inches while we were having coffee.  Yes, coffee lasted a bit longer that morning.  No way could we make it to the car without getting soaked.

This reminds me of another time it rained really hard.  I have used this story a couple of times, here and there, so excuse me if you have heard it.  My mother, sister and I were sitting talking and laughing, after a very nice meal.  We had no idea what time it was until the owner came over and explained it was time to close.  We also had no idea it was raining.  Raining a lot!

We went outside.  My car was parked at the far side of the lot.  My mother and sister looked at each other.  Then they looked at me and said, “It is your car.”  I was trying to figure out how to get to my car and knew the shoes were going to come off.  Just then a very sweet lady, who was waiting on her husband to pick her up, kindly offered, “When my husband gets here, you just get in and have him take you to your car.”  Not sure which face showed the most surprise.  The man’s face as I jumped into his car or my mother’s face as she realized I never learned the stranger-danger rule or my sister’s as she got the “yup-that-is-Mary” look.  While they stood under the awning, I arrived at my car dry, thanked the very surprised gentleman and picked up my sister and still-in-shock mother.

I love to tell that story.  Makes me smile every time I think about that poor man having a strange women hop into his car.  Makes my heart smile when I think about the woman who provided a way to keep me dry.  Makes my soul laugh when I picture my mother standing there, mouth open, as I rode off in a stranger’s car.

Rain comes into all our lives.  Storms cause havoc.  Thunder and lightning can make us quiver.  The storms pass.  The sun comes out.

= = = = = = = = = = = =

Sometimes storms come to get our attention.
Then the LORD sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.     Now the LORD provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.  Jonah 1: verses 4 and 17

Sometimes storms are calmed to show us God’s power.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress.  He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.  They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven.  Psalm 107:28-30

One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.”  So they got into a boat and set out.  As they sailed, he fell asleep.  A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.  The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!”  He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.  Luke 8:22-24

Sometimes storms happen to get us where we need to be.
(Paul, a prisoner, and others were on a ship that set sail because there was a gentle wind.)  Before very long, a wind of hurricane force, called the Northeaster, swept down from the island.  The ship was caught by the storm and could not head into the wind; so we gave way to it and were driven along.  Acts 27: 14-15

Last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me and said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul.  You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.  So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as he told me.  Nevertheless, we must run aground on some island.” Acts 27:23-25

(The ship struck a sandbar and broke to pieces.  The soldiers planned to kill the prisoners but a centurion wanted to spare Paul’s life and stopped them.)  He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to land.  The rest were to get there on planks or on other pieces of the ship.  In this way everyone reached land safely.  Acts 27: part of 43-44

The storm got Jonah’s attention.  The storm being calmed taught the disciples a lesson.  The storm destroyed a ship at just the exact location where Paul was to continue his mission.

Have you had a storm in your life lately?  If so, I pray you had the faith to go through the storm.

Dear LORD, Somedays your children wonder if they can make it through the storms.  I pray you will lift them up and give them strength and courage.  I pray you will take away their fears and do not allow them to get discouraged.  LORD, open their hearts and their souls so they can feel your presence with every breath they take.  Send comfort so they know you are always with them.   Amen and Amen.

TOO OLD WISE.  DO NOT LIVE IN THE PAST.   ALWAYS.

A few weeks back, I wrote about being labeled young or old.  I do believe age is a state of mind, as much as it is the number of birthdays you have celebrated.

I’M TOO OLD WISE FOR THAT

There have been a few changes to my bucket list.  After having a broken wrist, I realize I can break.  After having foot surgery a number of years ago, I realize there are things my feet would rather I not do.   Therefore, I have taken two activities off my bucket list.

Skydiving – Yes, I know President Bush took the plunge way past the age of 70 but I have a feeling there were a whole lot of protections in place to keep him safe.  Pretty much guaranteed no secret service would be in place to catch me if something went wrong.  Skydiving is no longer on my list.

Zip Line – My mother passed on arthritis in her hands to me, bless her heart.  That means gripping can be a problem.  When I see pictures of smiling people sailing over the tops of trees, they seem to be holding on very tightly.  Zip lining is no longer on my list.  Although, if I didn’t have to climb a gazillion steps to reach the launch area and if I was sure someone at the other end was going to make sure I stopped (both concerns due to previous mentioned foot problems) and if I could actually allow myself be launched off a secure area and flung out into space, I might move this back to my bucket list.

I DO NOT LIVE IN THE PAST

Am I four months shy of 71 or am I two months shy of 19?  (Confused?  Read June 2 blog.)  No matter how you want to figure my years, my heart and mind remain young.  I pray I will always honor the past but live in today.  I hope my mantra will never be:  But we have never done it that way.  NOR  Back when I was a kid.  NOR  I do not need to learn.

Contemporary Christian music – I love the old hymns.  I do.  They have helped build my faith but Christian music did not stop getting written somewhere back in 1872 or 1911 or 1948 or 1969.  Christian artists are still inspiring with their words and music today.  Today’s music will, in the future, be considered traditional.  Christian music can be played on – are you ready for this – guitars, drums and keyboards.  I enjoy Amazing Grace and Even If.  I have a special place in my heart for In the Garden and Hello My Name Is.  My absolute favorite hymn is Here I am Lord and in second place is Flawless.

A New Way – I cannot think of one thing I do that has not changed or evolved over the years.  If I move that pan to this cabinet, it is more convenient.  If I pay bills on line, it is much quicker.  If I learn to use a computer/iPad/internet, I can communicate with the world or develop a website or write a blog or be on Instagram.  Although I still like the feel of a book in my hands and the sound of turning a page, I read many books on my iPad.  Yesterday was great.  It got me to today.

But I do not live in yesterday.  I hope I never lose the desire to learn and change and evolve.

ALWAYS

Yes - I’M TOO OLD WISE FOR THAT.  Yes – I DO NOT LIVE IN THE PAST.  Yes – parts of my life can only be classified as ALWAYS.

I like to start my day with coffee.  Before coffee, I cannot be held accountable for my actions.

One thing I have never been accused of is being is normal.

Many people, especially hubby, children and grandchildren, are trying to figure out my thought process.  To date no one has even come close.

/ / / / /  \ \ \ \ \

Today’s blog started with an idea and was going pretty good.  But then …..

………… somehow it took a turn and now it is done.  At least the clip art pictures are really cute.

Have a super fantastic week.
P.S. Maybe there is a point after all.  So often we are absolutely sure we are on the right path.  Our feet, our heart, our mind - all headed in the direction God wants us to go.  Then something happens and we realize we have taken a different road.  Just like this post.  When that happens, stop.  Pray.  Wait.  Listen.  Pray.  Begin your journey again with your feet traveling down the correct path again.

A GREAT CELEBRATION

Red.  White.  Blue.  Noise.  Fireworks.  Hot dogs.  Civic Bands.  Yup!  It is the 4th of July.

I have great memories of this day.  The town where I grew up celebrated with a midway that rivaled the state fair.  I rode the tilt-a-whirl, the farris wheel, the scrambler and merry-go-round.  If I ran out of money, I knew where to find dad.  He played bingo and I could always go hit him up for a couple more rides.  Mom could be found walking around but she was not the easy touch dad was.  Then the fireworks began.  I loved the fireworks.

I still do!  I love the feeling of the bang when it is loud enough to hammer into my chest.  I love the smell.  I love the designs.  I ohh and ahh as the red turns gold and twirlies (a non-official word) make a sizzle sound.  I hate it when the last one fades.

I love this country!  I believe God blessed this country and hubby and I have been so very fortunate to see the vastness.  From every direction, in every state, along every river, on the top of every mountain and in every valley, I believe God has blessed this country

God was seen in almost every government building as the Ten Commandments were proudly displayed.  Schools posted the Ten Commandments and said the Pledge of Allegiance.  The Cross was displayed on government owned properties.  The manger scene was displayed outside of court houses across the country.

But now this country is turning its back on God.  The Ten Commandments are being taken down or covered up.  The Pledge is rarely said in schools and when was the last time you heard the Pledge of Allegiance said anywhere?  A Cross is no longer allowed on government owned properties.  And manger scenes are banned from most court house squares.

When did this start?  Why?  What can we do about it?

I do not have the answers.  I searched scriptures and there are so many about Israel walking with God.  Then turning from Him.  Then turning to Him.  Then walking with God.  And repeating the cycle time and time again.  How can our country not learn from these scriptures?  How can this country go from feeling God’s blessings to saying God has no place in our government.  When did God get confined to the inside of the church?

I love this country!   From every direction, in every state, along every river, on the top of every mountain and in every valley, I believe God has blessed this country.  Why are we not blessing God?

SWEET HUBBY

My hubby has always told me he loves me.  The other day he blew me away.  Know what he said?

I love you constantly.

Wow.  Not I love you this second.  This minute.  This hour.

Not I love you for making me a pie.  For hemming up my jeans.  For working in the office.

Not I love you because you are the mother of our children.  Because you are a good grandma.  Because you volunteer.

Just plain, “I love you constantly.”

Constantly!

Wow.  Now this is a man who knows how to make me feel loved.  To make me feel special.

This blog is going to be very short.  The point is brief.

GOD LOVES EACH OF US CONSTANTLY!!

Not for this second.  This minute.  This hour.

Not for doing good.  For memorizing scripture.  For teaching a Sunday School class.

Just plain, “I love you constantly!

Constantly!

I trust in God’s unfailing love for ever and ever.
Psalm 52:8b made personal

For God so loved me that he gave his one and only Son,
and because I believe in him
I shall not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16 made personal

Unfailing.  Ever.  Ever.  CONSTANTLY!

God loves me.  Gave HIS Son.  I believe.  I shall not perish.  Eternal life.  CONSTANTLY AND ETERNALLY!

Please read this out loud:

GOD LOVES ME CONSTANTLY AND ETERNALLY!  I AM SPECIAL TO GOD!

MEMORIES

Memories – This can be a very dangerous word to use.  It can start you down the road of “back in the day” or it can start you down the road of “I do not want to go there.”  When I close my eyes and allow memories to float through, it is a combination of both.

My dad was a truck driver.  He was not home a lot.  That caused many of the “I do not want to go there” memories.  Dad being home/gone/home/gone resulted in confusion.  We always asked mom for permission to do something:  go swimming, go to the neighbors (Yes, we asked permission even though it was only one step over the property line.), or go to a movie.  But then dad would be home and expect us to ask him.  We would forget, ask mom and then dad was not a happy camper.

Dad usually sat at the kitchen table, with a glass of water, a cup of coffee and a cigarette.  Except for an occasional Saturday night when he would come into the living room and we would watch the last of a movie, change channels and watch the last of another movie and change channels and watch the last of a movie we had no idea of what was going on.  (There were only three channels.)  That is a back in the day good memory.

At breakfast the other day, we were talking about living with no air conditioning.  To be honest, we had an early form of air conditioning.  The windows were open and fans moved the air around.  At night we slept where the air was moving the most.  Maybe in bed, but usually on the floor somewhere.  (That made for getting up to go to the bathroom a challenge.  You never knew where someone would be stretched out.)  I used to take naps in the porch swing.  I would wake up to kitchen chairs propped against the swing so I would not fall out.  Another good memory.

I love to watch storms.  Even as a kid.  I would sit in a corner of the porch where rain never reached.  If it turned chilly, I would wrap up in a blanket.  The clouds would swirl.  The rain would come.  The thunder would roll.  The lightning streak.  And I would sit there taking in every sound, sight and smell.  I love the smell after a storm.  Clean!  And the colors after a storm.  Green.  Blue.  White.  As if God opened a new box of crayons and colored away.  For sure, a good memory.

Memories keep floating around in my head and heart:  Mother made the best peanut butter pie ever.  Dad played board games and croquet with us but was always changing the rules.  Seeing my very tall dad washing dishes beside my much shorter mom.

But I also remember never hearing my dad tell me he loved me and that leaves a hurt that never goes away.  There were four of us kids, but my mother had only one child:  the oldest.  When I asked her about that, she said, “There is something special about your first born.”   When I asked about the second, third and fourth, she said nothing.  Another memory which left a very deep scar.

Now this last “I do not want to go there” memory is going to make you wonder what kind of a Christian I am.  We were sent to church but neither mom nor dad attended with us.  Fast forward many years and my mother started going to church.  Know what?  I was mad!  Why couldn’t she have gone when we were kids?  Kids with no parent beside us in the pew.  She went to Bible study.  She bought a Bible Commentary.  And she told about her Sunday School class and getting hugs each Sunday.  Now why should I be mad and hurt because my mother started attending church?

It took me many years to understand that the home my dad grew up in is where he learned about love and that it was shown with actions (providing for his family) instead of words.  It took me many years to accept the fact that mom did love my brother in a different way than she loved us girls.  It took time for me to be thrilled that mom was going to church.
When I finally looked back.  When I finally understood.  When I finally accepted.  When I finally let go.  When I finally forgave.  I realized something.  I love my father.  I love my mother.  They were not perfect parents.  But they are my parents!  I have directed many conversations upward and I do believe we have it all worked out.

Life is made up of memories.  Some good, some bad and some are just there.  What we do with those memories is what is important.  We can allow them to give us joy.  We can allow them to make us bitter.

Some memories we want to hold dear.  I saw a quote that said:  Memories are timeless treasures of the heart.  So true.  Never let those good memories go.

BUT some memories we need to let go of and move forward.  We need to see that God does not want the past to hold us from the future HE has planned for us.

Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 3:13-14

Life is made up of memories.
Some good, some bad and some are just there.
What we do with those memories is what is important.
We can allow them to give us joy.
We can allow them to make us bitter.

What are you doing with your memories?

BROKEN MEASURING CUP, SMOKE FROM THE OVEN AND JOY

I was off for a day with a 13 year old grandson.  A day-a-week-during-the-summer with this set of grandsons is a tradition.  Now it is usually just me and the last of the four boys.  Last summer Tim wanted to learn how to cook.  We did main dishes.  His family liked coming home and finding supper ready to put on the table.  This summer we are working on desserts.

Our day did not go quite as planned.  First up was a dump cake.  Easy to make and it was quickly in the oven.  Since it was a quick and easy dessert, Tim was also going to make a rhubarb pie for his grandpa.  I ask for a mixing cup.

Oops!  It slipped right out of my hand.  Glass everywhere!  In the rug in front of the sink.  Over in front of the fridge.  Across the kitchen and under the table.  Just how far can glass bounce?  A long way and it can break into a lot of pieces.

I cleaned the glass up.  (Remember – 13 year old boy and we all know how they are at cleaning.)  I mopped the floor.  I looked close.  I picked up pieces of teeny, tiny glass slivers which hid from the broom and mop.

Than it was back to baking.  Tim cut the rhubarb.  He measured.  He put the pie together.  He put the pie in the oven.

The pie ran over!!  I opened the windows.  Turned on fans.  Just how much smoke can one pie make?  A lot!  Luckily the smoke alarms did not go off and the alarm company did not call because the alarms were going off and the fire department was not called because there was smoke rolling out of those open windows.

And then the joy began!  Tim sampled his cake and licked his lips.  Success!  He then tried the pie, which he knew he would not like.  He licked his lips.  Success!

Tim teased me about dropping the cup.  (He also made sure his mother knew I dropped the cup, not him.)  We were amazed at the amount of smoke lingering in the kitchen.

Funny how joy comes ….. Well, joy comes at the most unexpected times.

PSALM 30:11 (reworded to fit the day)

You turned a broken cup into dancing (around pieces of broken glass) and removed the smoke and surrounded us with joy.

Where do you find joy?
Joy is everywhere.  Allow it to be a part of your day.  A part of your life.
Then share that joy with others.

Young - Old - Young

Age is such a changing value.  I can remember years ago when I was the youngest person on the funeral dinner committee at church.  Later, I remember looking around the table at a woman’s Bible study and thinking, “I am the oldest lady taking this study.  How did that happen?  How and when did I get old?”

Age is such a changing value.  Just this week I gave a message at a retirement home chapel.  I looked around and thought, “I am the youngest person in this room.”

That evening our grandson came for a visit.  When he walked in, I ask, “How does it feel to be a Senior?  You have no idea how fast this year is going to go.”  He said, “It feels strange to be a Senior.  But this next year cannot go any faster than the last one.”  I gave him a “just you wait” grin and we sat and talked.  My mind was whirling:  When did he get this old?  He should still be a little boy.

A couple weeks ago, another grandson informed me, “Well, grandma, you are young at heart because you are only 19.”  Sounds good!  I do like contemporary Christian music, have an Instagram account, am on Facebook and, for sure, do not feel 70 on the inside.  (The outside knows it is 70 and has grey hair and some aches and pains to prove it.)  Actually, I can celebrate both.  I will be 19 in September because I died in 1998 during an operation.  Or I will be 71 in November when I celebrate the day I was born.

Age is such a changing value --- and we all have a big change ahead.

Are you ready for A BRAND-NEW LIFE?

(John the Baptist speaking)  “I’m baptizing you here in the river, turning your old life in for a kingdom life.  The real action comes next:  The main character in this drama – compared to him I’m a mere stagehand – will ignite the kingdom life within you, a fire within you, the Holy Spirit within you, changing you from the inside out.  He’s going to clean house – make a clean sweep of your lives.  He’ll place everything true in its proper place before God; everything false he’ll put out with the trash to be burned.”
Matthew 3:11-12 from The Message

What a God we have!  And how fortunate we are to have him, this Father of our Master Jesus!  Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we’ve been given a brand-new life and have everything to live for, including a future in heaven – starts now!  God is keeping careful watch over us and the future.  The Day is coming when you’ll have it all -- life healed and whole.
1 Peter 1:3-5 from The Message

Sometimes we dig deep into the Word of God (a good thing) but sometimes we need to go back to Religion 101.  The basics.

Religion 101:  Your life will change.

Baptized by Jesus = The Holy Spirit living within you = A changed life
Jesus was raised from the dead = A brand new life = A future in heaven

Are you young?  Are you old?  Know what?  It does not matter.  Your new life and your future in heaven begin the minute you accept Jesus.

Are you ready for A BRAND-NEW LIFE?  There is one waiting for you.
